This monday we had one of our favorite events of the year: Black Feminism Speaks’ Poetry Night! So many people came up on the stage at the Shack and shared such personal stories with us. Some shared their original work, while others shared the work of published poets. One performer even shared her own published work!
Most performed solo, but we had an amazing powerful piece about vaginas done by a duo!
A few brave performers even took advantage of our open mic night and the end of the evening!
We ended the night with a quote from Audre Lorde that perfectly sums up the reasons this night was so important to all of us:
“Poetry is not a luxury. It is a vital necessity of our existence. It forms the quality of the light within which we predicate our hopes and dreams toward survival and change, first made into language, then into idea, then into more tangible action.”
Who is your favorite feminist poet?
